“West Aucklanders are determined the future of the Waitakere Ranges will not be at risk under the National Government’s Super City proposal,” Lynne Pillay said.
“Thousands of West Aucklanders have protested in the streets, made submissions to the select committee and now are petitioning Parliament calling for the Ranges to be protected in perpetuity as a regional park for the people of Auckland.
“The petition also calls for reinstatement of the protection of the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area which is threatened by the National Government’s Super City Bill.
“I congratulate West Aucklanders for their tenacity. My colleague David Cunliffe and I worked so hard, with so many people, to get the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area Act through.
“The National Party and Paula Bennett never supported it and are using the Super City Bill as a back door to gut the Act.
“I know Labour members on the select committee considering the petition will support these changes and I challenge the National Party to support what Aucklanders are calling for – keeping long term protection of the Waitakere Ranges,” Lynne Pillay said.
