Council votes against rent increase for pensioners
10.06.10 Waitakere City Councillors today unanimously voted not to increase the rent of its older adult housing tenants. Instead $300,000 will be added to the annual plan to cover recent refurbishment costs.

Acting Mayor Penny Hulse, a strong advocate for no rent increase, said after the meeting justice had been done.

“We listened very carefully to the concerns of tenants and we gave much thought to a number of options,” she said.

“I am very pleased all my council colleagues supported the recommendation to add money into the annual plan so the tenants will have no increase for the term of their current tenure.  I think they went away happy.”

Waitakere City Council has a long and proud history of supporting the community through a range of services and initiatives including housing for older adults.

“We do not receive any government funding to operate social housing programmes like ours but we have been very committed to doing the right thing by these people,” says Ms Hulse.

“We were also very aware there are uncertain times ahead with the transition to Auckland Council and we wanted to ensure some security for our tenants.”
